the glass of wine on the bedside table
blood red
is filled with the bodies of dead fruit flies
i sit there for a while
watch them coagulate
in the alcohol and the sweetness that we hate
and it's a while we all wait
for them to dissolve again and again
the estate sale was ruthless
your house
turned to a carcass thoroughly picked clean
we burned all the trash
Nat Geo clippings
of the places we all knew you'd never meant to go
but it's ok
you had no intention of letting go
and the smell of plastic burning
as the smoke shadow'd the yard
was enough to drive away
even the eyes of god

the garden is always locked from within
and the fence is electrified
four thousand volts is a lot i guess
but the shock makes me feel alive
my heart palpitates
looking at the queen's lace
and it's never enough
when you're looking at the mourning dove
so i get up for work before dawn again
watch the sun do it's waltzes upon
the glass panels of the greenhouse roof
that shimmer with every dead star
but i still can't find the key
beneath wild tiger-lilies
and i'm sitting there in the grass
before getting up and walking past
in the fields
punctuated by wine-caps
a fox pokes it's head up from the tall grass
and i don't know
what any of this means
so i'm left searching for
a different set of keys

our love was like a pomegranate; infinite
but it seems the seeds are gonna run out eventually
let the juice trickle down your chin and neck
then pool at your feet like acid rain
flesh sweet, chewed and then spit out again
saccharine but filled with blood and bile
flayed out; watch the juice all trickle down the sidewalk
flayed out; abandoned tenderly for good
